Assistant News Director

WLNE-TV/ABC 6, the ABC affiliate in Providence, Rhode Island, is looking for an assistant news director to help lead coverage across all our platforms.

Top candidates will have strong editorial judgement and leadership skills — and must be passionate about creating impactful content. The AND collaborates with the news director, digital content manager, and other members of the management team to execute strategic coverage and innovate storytelling both on-air and online.

Responsibilities:

  • Proofs and review scripts and graphics in producer rundowns
  • Reviews and edits reporter scripts
  • Points and guides reporters on story development
  • Aggressively leads breaking news and severe weather coverage
  • Works with digital content manager to reach digital and social goals
  • Works closely with news director on recruitment and development
  • Identifies and leads production of special coverage — ex. severe weather, elections
  • Develops and implements plans for sweeps and special reports

Qualifications:

  • Minimum of 5 years of local news management experience and major understanding of news content in the digital/social world
  • Detail-oriented and understands how the content drives the storytelling format for various platforms
  • Works effectively under deadline pressure
  • Must be flexible with working hours and adaptable to change
  • Ability to make logical decisions in a fast-paced environment

Work Environment:

This is a 24/7 business that requires employees to be flexible and available immediately during breaking news.
