Atlantic 10 To Aid Schools With COVID-19 Expenses, Amends Protocols
Atlantic 10 Conference Press Release
NEWPORT NEWS, Va. —. The A-10 Presidents Council has approved a $1.4 million supplemental distribution, issuing each member institution $100,000 for expenses incurred by COVID-19 protocols. The additional distribution will be used to offset cost for testing, protected travel procedures, and unbudgeted expenses associated with numerous safety and health protocols implemented to protect the student-athletes, staff and campus community.
“I applaud the CEOs for this decision which is possible due to the excellent financial decisions we have made over the last several years,” stated Commissioner Bernadette V. McGlade. “To mitigate risk and successfully attempt to compete in the COVID-19 environment, A-10 Institutions have committed significant resources to implement safety and health protocols which have real associated cost. Additionally, the attention to student-athlete welfare, mental stress support and managing social anxiety requires financial commitments in varying amounts. “
In conjunction with this decision, the council received an updated report from the league’s COVID-19 Medical Advisory Committee. Protocols for the 2020-21 men’s and women’s basketball season were revised to reflect the changing recommendations from the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and NCAA return to sport resocialization guidelines. This includes the recent shortening of the quarantine period from 14 to 10 days, and seven days with negative testing. Additionally, the suspension of testing following a positive result, which was originally 90 days, could be considered for up to 150 days. In both instances, the individual must remain asymptomatic. A-10 institutions follow the lead of local public health authorities, who determine and establish the quarantine options for their jurisdictions. Conference-wide individual game attestation forms, home arena spacing, sanitization and access protocols were reviewed, and A-10 officiating protocols were noted. Education for league membership regarding testing, positive results, return to play and safety protocols also continues to be a key component of the Atlantic 10 plans.
