UPDATE: Man charged in Easton police chase, officer-involved shooting held without bail

EASTON, Mass. (WLNE) – The suspect charged in a police chase turned officer-involved shooting in Easton was held without bail Monday.

Officers said they have filed a number of charges against the suspect, 29-year-old Serge J. Andre Jr. of Hyde Park, including attempt to commit a crime – breaking and entering, failure to stop for police and reckless operation of a motor vehicle.

They first responded to Bay Road around 2 p.m. Sunday after a woman called 911, saying there was someone knocking on her door and an unknown vehicle in her driveway, according to Chief Gary F. Sullivan. Police said Andre then sped off when police arrived.

Officials said Andre had been knocking on doors in the area in what they believe was an attempt to case homes for robberies.

Officers briefly attempted to follow the vehicle, then called off the chase because he was driving 60-miles-per-hour on a residential road, according to Sullivan. Police monitored him from a distance.

Andre then crashed into another vehicle on Bay Road. Neither driver was hurt.

As officers approached, he emerged and pointed what appeared to be a handgun at officers, said Sullivan, so the officers fired – hitting the Andre at least once. He is currently in serious condition at Boston Medical Center.

The two officers were not hurt, but taken to a local hospital for evaluation. They have been placed on administrative leave during the investigation.

Andre is scheduled to appear in court on January 15.

The Bristol County District Attorney’s Office and state troopers are taking the lead on the investigation.
