Bank of America, Speaker Fox, Mayor Taveras support new home for Billy Taylor House

Providence Mayor Angel Taveras, Speaker of the House Gordon foxx and Bank of America Rhode Isaln President Bill Hatfield hosted a ribon cutting fot The Billy Taylor House  on Camp Street in Providence. The Billy Taylor House is a nonprofit organization that will help support the adolescents in the Mount Hope neighborhood with workforce and life skills.

The goal of the organization is to carry-on the work of Billy Taylor who grew up in the home that is now newly rennovated.

 “When I was approached by the board members, I was proud to work with Mayor Taveras and Bank of America to facilitate the house donation and the exciting plans that they have for our young people……The organization will provide invaluable assistance to the youth of Mount Hope to learn vocational job-training skills to help them succeed in life,” said Fox.

Upon Speaker Fox gaining a $5,000 legislative grant for the newly completed summer programming, Mayor Taveras and City Councilman Kevin Jackson, pending HUD approval, are obtaining a Community Development Block Grant of $74,000 for the renovation of the house.

When asked about the subject Mayor Taveras stated: “I was pleased to work with Speaker Fox to secure a new home for the Billy Taylor House and I thank Bank of America for their generous donation.”

Rhode Island Bank of America President Bill Hatfield generously donated an additional $10,000 from the Bank of America Charitable Foundation; this grant will help to quicken the renovation process.

Billy Taylor died at the age of 29 in 1986 of heart ailment problems that he battled his whole life.

In his short time alive he helped guide hundreds of youth in Mount Hope.   

As an all volunteer organization, the Billy Taylor House's objective is to carry out the legacy of Billy Taylor in the house that he grew up in and once it is renovated, will be in his name.  

There will also be a park named in Taylor's memory on Camp Street.
