Bear wandering southeastern Massachusetts last seen in Acushnet

ACUSHNET, Mass. (WLNE) — A bear taking a tour of southeastern Massachusetts has wandered into Acushnet.

An ABC 6 News viewer sent video of the bear running down Mendall Road at about 2 p.m. Tuesday.

Acushnet police said the bear was last seen in the area of Nyes Lane. They advised residents to bring all pets inside and to ultimately leave the bear alone.

New Bedford police directed residents to bear safety tips provided by the Massachusetts Division of Fisheries & Wildlife. Those who see the bear are advised to make loud noises and slowly back away.

A search for the bear was called off in New Bedford after it ran into the woods of Acushnet.

It was seen throughout the city, scoping out for food outside Pa Raffa’s Italian Restaurant and even hiding under a deck at a home in the north end.

Officials aren’t sure if the sightings have been one or multiple black bears.

Sightings have been reported in parts of Bristol and Norfolk counties. A bear was caught stealing a bird feeder in Dartmouth and relaxing on a deck in Fall River.

Authorities said to report further bear sightings by calling 911.
