Block Island officials to vote on indoor mask mandate Monday

NEW SHOREHAM, R.I. (WLNE) – The New Shoreham Town Council will now vote Monday on whether to instate a mandate for masks indoors, regardless of someone’s vaccination status.

Thursday night town leaders, business owners, and state health experts weighed in on the debate.

ABC6 spoke with visitors hopping off the Block Island Ferry, most of whom said a mask mandate would make them rethink their summer plans.

“All the people I have always known go to Block Island want to have fun, and no one wants to wear a mask all the time,” said Talia Gallucci, a Block Island visitor.

The debate comes as coronavirus cases continue to spread across the state, many of them being the Delta variant.

Block Island officials recently announced nearly a dozen new COVID cases have been traced back to the island in the past two weeks. Three of those cases are people who are fully vaccinated.
