Governor Lincoln Chafee signed a new bill honoring parents of active military members and veterans. The first Sunday after mother’s day will be known as “Blue Star Parents Day” in Rhode Island.

The day is in honor of the blue stars mothers’ organization which helps support parents of past and present military members.

“We support each other. We help each other through promotions, and moves and deployments and weddings and grandbabies being born because we can’t be with our children so we celebrate with each other,” said Betty Leech who is herself a Blue Star Mother.

The organization was founded during World War II. There are currently 38 active Blue Star Moms in the Rhode Island chapter. More than 100 families in the state have a loved one serving.
