Body of fallen Marine to arrive in New Bedford
NEW BEDFORD, Mass. (WLNE) — New Bedford Mayor Jon Mitchell said that the body of a fallen Marine will arrive in the city Tuesday afternoon.
The mayor said that Sgt. Samuel Demers died unexpectedly on June 20.
His body will be flown into Rhode Island T.F. Green International Airport at 1 p.m. Then, a procession and escort will run along Interstate 195 east to Dartmouth. The procession will pass Demers’ father’s home and end at Saunders Dwyer Funeral Home on Park Street.
Mitchell said that he has ordered flags in the city to fly at half-mast through Friday.
According to his obituary, Demers graduated from Greater New Bedford Regional Vocational Technical High School in 2015 and joined the Marine Corps shortly after.
“Sam was a loving father to his daughter, who was born during his 2016 deployment, and a dedicated husband. He fiercely loved his girls and was a giant teddy bear kind of guy,” read part of his obituary.
He leave behind his wife, daughter, parents, and siblings.
Demers’ funeral will be at noon Friday. Visiting hours will run from 8 a.m. to noon.
