BARRINGTON, R.I. (WLNE) – A body was recovered from Brickyard Pond Sunday morning after a fisherman reported seeing a body in the water.

Joseph E. Tavares, 46, of Warren, was identified as the man recovered from the water.

Officials say they did not see signs of foul play.

Barrington Police responded at approximately 8:30 a.m. after a caller reported finding a bike, shirt, cell phone, and cigarettes on the Red Trail path in Vet’s Park behind the YMCA.

The items were located near the edge of Brick Yard Pond.

Police searched the area for the owner but could not locate anyone.

An officer called the last two numbers dialed in the cell phone to find out who the phone belonged to.

The last contact stated that the phone belonged to Tavares and that she had not seen him since 3:00 p.m. Saturday.

As Barrington Fire and watercraft officials were heading to Brickyard Pond, they received a call from a man fishing on a boat in the pond stating that he saw a body in the water.

Tavares’ body was recovered from the water soon after.

A cause of death has not yet been determined.

Barrington Police Chief John LaCross said in a statement, “On behalf of the men and women of the Barrington Police Department, our deepest condolences are extended to the Tavares’ family during their tragic loss.”
