Former Boston Mayor Thomas Menino has passed away.

Menino, the longest standing mayor of Boston, died this morning at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston after a long battle with cancer.

The 71-year-old died on Thursday morning after he suspended his cancer treatments to spend time with his family.

Menino served as mayor from 1993 to 2014.

He was the city’s first Italian-American mayor. He left office on January 6, 2014 when Marty Walsh took the reigns.

Menino announced in 2013 that he would leave the mayors office due to his declining health.
