NEWPORT, R.I. (WLNE) — One of the Newport mansions began an addition on to their historic grounds Thursday morning.

The Breakers held an official groundbreaking Thursday on a somewhat controversial new ‘Welcoming Center’.

The Breakers is one of the most iconic places in Rhode Island. Therefore, naturally they had a large turnout of supporters for Thursday’s groundbreaking event, but there were groups that opposed the new addition as well.

Those opposed are concerned that the new construction will have a negative impact on one of the most historic Newport mansions.

Dozens of supporters showed up in their Newport best for Thursday’s groundbreaking event of a new ‘Welcome Center’ at the Breakers.

Organizers say after years of legal battles and bureaucratic hurdles, it was nice to see things progressing.

The new ‘Welcome Center’ will have bathrooms, a café, and a Tourism Guide Center for those visiting Newport for the first time. However, those perks are not winning everybody over.

The Friends of Newport Preservation called upon the Governor to step in and stop the project. They called the ‘Welcome Center’ plan “misguided.”

So far, no response from Governor Raimondo as it looks like the construction project will continue moving forward as scheduled.

If all goes to plan, the ‘Welcome Center’ will be ready to open at this time in 2018.
