Four To Plead Guilty to Corruption Charges in North Providence
PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) – Four people charged with corruption in North Providence, including three former town councilmen, have agreed to plead guilty.
The U.S. Attorney's office says former councilmen Joseph Burchfield, Raymond Douglas III and John Zambarano have agreed to plead guilty to conspiracy in several extortion and bribery schemes, including one in which they took a $25,000 bribe in exchange for a zoning change to allow a supermarket to be built.
Prosecutors say Edward Imondi, who was accused of acting as a middleman, will also plead guilty.
The men will also have to jointly forfeit $46,000, the total amount of the bribes they received.
