The body of the 2-year-old Nebraska boy who was dragged into a lake by an alligator at a Walt Disney World resort has been recovered, authorities said.

They made the announcement Wednesday afternoon.

Wildlife officials removed five alligators from the lagoon. They were killed and cut open for signs of the missing boy, who was presumed to be dead after being snatched off the shore and dragged underwater by an alligator.

Disney has closed the beaches at its Florida resorts, out of what it calls “an abundance of caution.”

Orange County Sheriff Jerry Demings says some 50 people were "working on recovering the body” of the missing boy, using sonar equipment to search a system of lakes and ponds linked by canals to the Seven Seas Lagoon where the boy was attacked while wading in about a foot of water at 9 p.m. Tuesday night.

Demings says the were trying to "bring some closure to this family.”
