Breaking: Maselli Sentenced to 27 Months in Prison

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) – A former Rhode Island state senator convicted of bank fraud has been sentenced to 27 months in federal prison.

Christopher Maselli pleaded guilty in November to illegally obtaining $1.7 million in loans and mortgages by lying on his applications.

U.S. District Judge Mary Lisi sentenced him Thursday in federal court in Providence and ordered him to serve three years supervised released once his prison term is over.

In court, Maselli expressed remorse, and apologized to his family, friends, and those affected by his crimes.

Prosecutors had asked that he be fined $80,000, but the judge declined to fine him.

Maselli, a 38-year-old lawyer, last year gave up his Senate seat representing the town of Johnston and has been disbarred.
