Tuesday’s primary names Brett Smiley as Providence’s next mayor

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) — Tuesday’s primary named Brett Smiley as Providence’s next mayor.

The Associated Press called the race Wednesday morning, while Democratic candidates — Gonzalo Cuervo and Nirva LaFortune — conceded Tuesday night.

Incumbent Mayor Jorge Elorza, who didn’t run for re-election because of term-limits, also congratulated Smiley on his victory.

With 95% of the votes in, Smiley has over 8,000 total votes.

Smiley is no stranger to Rhode Island politics, serving as the chief of staff to former Gov. Gina Raimondo.
