PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) — The Rhode Island Department of Transportation closed a bridge in East Providence Friday.

The Department of Transportation said the Hunts Mill Bridge is being completely replaced. The bridge is expected to reopen by the end of the year. However, the final completion of the project is expected to be next summer.

The 96-year-old bridge carries Pleasant Street and runs over the Ten Mile River. Around 11,420 vehicles drive over the bridge every day.

RIDOT will duplicate the bridge’s historic features with modern structure.

Drivers should plan extra time for travel.
