Bridge replacement in Cranston to close I-95 lanes starting Friday

CRANSTON, R.I. (WLNE) — The Rhode Island Department of Transportation said it will begin a series of four consecutive weekend lane closures on Interstate 95 on Friday.

The closures will take place on near Route 10 exit 33 at the Cranston-Providence line for replacement of the Wellington Avenue Bridge.

RIDOT heavily emphasized that drivers should seek alternate routes such as Route 10 and Interstate 295.

Lanes will be closed on both sides of the highway for demolition and replacement of different parts of the bridge. At least two lanes will be open on the side of the bridge being worked on at all times.

RIDOT said that the closures will begin at 8 p.m. on Fridays and all lanes should be open by 5 a.m. the following Monday.

“For brief periods of time on Friday, Aug. 25 and for the week of Aug. 28 for I-95 South, and the week of Sept. 11 for I-95 North, there will be a lane split with two lanes on either side of the work zone,” the department added.

Drivers are told to not stop or suddenly split lanes at the split.

The department said that the bridge replacement operation also requires the closure of Wellington Avenue at the bridge. A detour will be in effect until mid-September.
