Bridgeport Sound Tigers Sound Off Against P Bruins

Sound Tigers Defeat P-Bruins 5-1 at The Dunk

Providence, RI The Providence Bruins fell to the Bridgeport Sound Tigers 5-1 on Sunday afternoon at the Dunkin' Donuts Center, ending the P-Bruins' five-game home point-streak (4-0-0-1). Jordan LaVallee-Smotherman netted the lone goal for the P-Bruins.

In their last two meetings entering play today, Providence and Bridgeport have accumulated 170 penalty minutes, including three suspensions. In the opening minutes of the first period, it seemed like it was going to be another penalty-filled contest as Colby Cohen dropped the mitts with Brett Gallant just over two minutes in. After a few quality scoring chances, the P-Bruins got on the board first when LaVallee-Smotherman got the final piece of a deflection from Trent Whitfield and a shot from Kirk MacDonald at 8:58 of the first. Bridgeport tied the game at one late in the frame when Gallant beat Michael Hutchinson at 17:37 of the period. Just 1:22 later, Rhett Rakhshani gave the Sound Tigers the lead to go into the first intermission up 2-1.

Providence couldn't stay out of the penalty box in the second frame, allowing Bridgeport to score three unanswered power play goals. Tony Romano gave Bridgeport a 3-1 lead at 6:03 of the frame and, just over two minutes later, Mark Katic extended the Sound Tigers' lead to three goals, after which Hutchinson was relieved by Anton Khudobin. The P-Bruins' frustrations continued to rise, sending more players to the box. Bridgeport took advantage of their fifth power play at 12:45 of the second when Jeremy Colliton gave the Sound Tigers a 5-1 lead going into the locker rooms for the second intermission.

Despite four man-advantage opportunities, Providence couldn't find the back of the net and fell to the Sound Tigers 5-1.

Hutchinson suffered the loss, blocking 20 shots before being relieved by Khudobin, who blocked 13 attempts in 31:22 of play. Joel Martin earned the win, stopping 28 shots.
