Bristol Community College investigates attempted data breach

NEW BEDFORD, Mass. (WLNE) — Bristol Community College announced it is investigating an attempted data breach on the school’s computer network.

On Friday, the college said hackers gained access to the college’s network around Dec. 23.

In a statement released on their website, BCC said the incident “involved ransomware encryption.”

At this time, the college has found no evidence that any personal information had been compromised.

The school’s internet and some network programs are currently down. Services including the enrollment center, student accounts, and financial aid are available by phone or walk-in.

The following tips have been provided to protect personal data:

  • Change your passwords
  • Use strong passwords
  • Don’t reuse passwords
  • Review your statements and watch for suspicious activity
  • Monitor your credit reports regularly
  • Report suspicious activity or unauthorized charges to your bank or financial institution
