Brown announces appointment of Locke as new provost

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) _ Brown University has appointed a new provost. Brown University President Christina Paxson announced Monday that Richard M. Locke would begin his new role July 1.                

Locke is currently the director for the university’s Watson Institute for International Studies. He is also a professor of political science and international affairs. Locke has been with Brown University since July 2013.     

Previously, Locke was a faculty member at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology for 25 years. He held the Alvin J. Siteman Chair in Entrepreneurship and later the Class of 1922 Chair in Political Science and Management. He is the author of five books on economics.       

Locke succeeds Provost Vicki Leigh Colvin, who announced May 19 she was leaving to return to teaching and doing research.
