Brown Bears to host Alabama-Birmingham Wednesday in CBI Tournament

Providence, R.I. – The Brown men’s basketball team has been selected to play in the Roman College Basketball Invitational (CBI) and will host the University of Alabama-Birmingham (UAB) on Wednesday, March 20 at the Pizzitola Sports Center. Tip-off is 7:00 pm, with broadcast on ESPN+ and WPRV AM-790 radio.

Brown will be making its second appearance in the CBI, having played Ohio University in 2008. Overall, the Bears will be making their sixth post-season appearance, having previously competed in the NCAA Championship (1939 and 1986), the NIT (2003), CBI (2008) and CIT (2014).

Coach Mike Martin’s squad matched the school record for wins in a season, set in 2008, with an overall record of 19-11. Led by senior captain Obi Okolie (Ajax, Ontario), the Ivy League Defensive Player of the Year, Brown ranked first in the league in scoring defense, holding opponents to 68.2 points per game, as well as three-point field goal percentage (.297).

Okolie, who, also earned Second Team All-Ivy honors, is the 28thtop scorer in Brown basketball history with 1,027 career points. Sophomore Tamenang Choh (Lowell, MA) was also a Second Team All-Ivy selection after leading the Ivy League in rebounding and posting 10 double-doubles for the Bears. Sophomore guard Desmond Cambridge (Nashville, TN), a USBWA District I selection, led the Bears and ranked fourth in the Ivy League in scoring, and was the league’s top shot blocker. Martin, Brown’s seventh year head coach, was named the Ivy League’s Coach of the Year.

UAB posted a 20-14 overall record and finished sixth in Conference USA with a 10-8 league mark, falling to eventual champion Old Dominion in the conference semifinals. The Blazers ranked fourth in the conference in scoring defense (67.3 ppg) and are led by Zack Bryant, who averaged 14.9 points, and Lewis Sullivan, who averaged 6.8 rebounds per game and is the only player to start all 34 games.

The Roman College Basketball Invitational is a 16-team, single elimination tournament, up until the CBI finals, with games being played at campus sites of the higher seed. The CBI Finals will be a best-of-three series. Quarterfinal games will be played on Monday, March 25 and the Semifinals rounds on March 27/28. The CBI Finals will be played April 1, April 3 and April 5 (if necessary).
