Brown news release…
New Britain, Conn. – Sophomore guard Steven Spieth scored 13 of his team high 19 points in the second half, and sophomore guard Tavon Blackmon added 16 points to lead Brown to a 67-55 win over Central Connecticut Monday afternoon at Detrick Gymnasium. Brown has now won five of their last six games, evening its record at 6-6 for the season, while Central Connecticut falls to 2-9 overall.
Spieth’s 19 points came on 7-of-14 shooting from the field, including 3-of-5 from beyond the three-point arc. He completed the double-double by pulling down a game high 10 rebounds.
Blackmon directed the Bears offense at the point and connected on 4-of-6 field goals on a dazzling array of drives to the basket, and converted 7-of-8 free throws. Bears junior forward Cedric Kuakumensah scored all of his points in the first half, while also grabbing nine rebounds and blocking five shots.
Brown dominated the glass, out-rebounding the Blue Devils by a 43-31 margin. Bears’ senior forward Rafael Maia also pulled down 10 rebounds, while adding six points.
Matt Mobley scored 22 points for Central Connecticut to lead all scorers, while Faronte Drakeford chipped in with 13 points for the Blue Devils.
Playing for the first time since beating Providence 14 days ago, coach Mike Martin’s Brown team got off to a sluggish start, going scoreless in the opening three minutes.
The Bears quickly recovered with strong defense to build a 25-14 advantage on a layup by Kuakumensah with 5:38 left in the opening half.
The Bears later extended their first half lead to 17 points, 36-19, on two free throws by Blackmon with 1:04 remaining. A late Central Connecticut basket by Mobley cut the Bears’ lead to 36-21 at intermission.
The Blue Devils made a run at the Bears with aggressive play at the basket to cut Brown’s lead to just six points, 52-46, with 8:29 remaining on a dunk by Greg Andrade.
A lay-up by freshman Jason Massey, back-to-back treys by Spieth, and a trey by Maia quickly stopped the Blue Devils’ momentum and put Brown back in control by 17 points, 63-46.
The Bears are scattering around the country for Christmas break after today’s game and will return to action on Sunday, December 28, hosting Sacred Heart at the Pizzitola Sports Center. The matinee tip-off is 2:00 pm.
