PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) _ It was a big day for graduates of Brown University.
The Ivy League school handed out some 2,530 degrees on Sunday at its 247th commencement.
The school awarded 1,641 bachelor’s degrees, 520 master’s degrees, 215 PhDs, 106 medical degrees and 48 honorary degrees.
Honorary doctorate recipients were San Francisco State University President Emeritus Robert A. Corrigan; University of New Mexico Professor Emerita Louise Lamphere; former IBM executive David McKinney; actress Tracee Ellis Ross; chemist Susan Solomon and astronaut and geoscientist Kathryn Sullivan.
Lamphere, a former Brown professor of anthropology, filed a landmark class-action lawsuit in the 1970s charging Brown with sex discrimination after being denied tenure.
The school’s Pembroke Center for Teaching and Research on Women hosted a two-day event in February examining Lamphere’s legacy.
