PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) _ Brown University has formally kicked off what it calls the largest comprehensive fundraising push in the Ivy League school’s history.

The $3 billion “BrownTogether” campaign was launched Friday night during a celebration at Pembroke Field.

The university said in a statement that the campaign will support education and research, campus infrastructure and student life.

Brown president Christina Paxson calls the fundraising effort “transformative” for the school.

The campaign is designed to support the goals outlined in the university’s strategic plan for growth and development that calls for collaboration across various fields of study to address critical world issues.

Prior to the formal launch of the campaign, the school said early gifts helped facilitate groundbreaking for a new, $88 million building for the School of Engineering.
