The Brown men’s basketball team took down Salve Regina 89-59 Tuesday night in its season-opener at the Pizzitola Sports Center.
Senior captain David Mitchell led the Bears with 13 points on four-of-six shooting. Paxson Wojcik had 12 points in his first game as a Bear. All 12 came from beyond the arc for the junior who also picked up five rebounds and three assists. “It’s great to get back to playing, being in front of some fans back in our own building,” head coach Mike Martin said. “There were a lot of things that happened tonight that we need to improve upon, but there were a lot of positives too. I thought we shared the ball really well. Credit to Salve and that group, they did a great job.”
The first half started off slow for both teams and the Seahawks managed to take a 10-9 lead five minutes into the half. From there, it was all Bears. Brown outscored Salve Regina 22-5 over the next 12 minutes to take a 31-15 lead with 7:29 remaining in the half.
Mitchell was responsible for the final six Bear points of the first half as Brown would take the 48-26 lead into halftime.
The Seahawks hung even with the Bears to start the second half, but four points from Nana Owusu-Anane and two from Perry Cowan stretched the lead to 30 with 13:16 remaining in the game.
The teams traded buckets for the remainder of the contest, with Brown pushing the lead to 37 after a Mitchell layup at the 6:17 mark. Salve Regina would get it back to 30 but that’s where it would stay.
Seventeen players saw action for the Bears in their first game in 611 days. Wojcik led all newcomers with 22:13 minutes, followed by Lilly’s 17:20 and Owusu-Anane’s 16:20.
Brown will be back in action this Friday, Nov. 12 at No. 19 North Carolina for a 9 p.m. matchu on the ACC Network.
