Brown Picked Fifth In Ivy League Football Preseason Media Poll

Providence, R.I. – With the return of 14 starters to the lineup, Brown football will look to prove the prognosticators wrong and once again challenge for the Ivy League Championship. The Ivy League Football Preseason Media Poll tabbed the Bears to finish fifth in the Ivy League standings, despite receiving one first-place vote. Harvard was chosen first with 130 points, followed by Dartmouth (116), Yale (98), Princeton (82), Brown (80), Penn (51), Columbia (29) and Cornell (26).

Headlining the offense for head coach Phil Estes’ squad is the return of starting quarterback Marcus Fuller, who ranked 14th nationally with 261.8 passing yards per game. The Bears feature one of the top receiving corps in the Ivy League with second team All-Ivy senior Brian Strachan (56 catches), along with All-Ivy junior Alex Jette (26 catches) and senior Troy Doles (26 catches).  Brown also features a talented offensive line, headlined by All-Ivy senior John Heile, a three-year starter at center. Estes is looking to get more production out of the running back position and will look to seniors Andrew Coke and Seth Rosenbauer to set the pace.

Brown’s defensive line returns three starters and three more with significant playing time, and is led by junior end Zach Sparber (38 tackles, 4 tackles for loss). Senior All-Ivy outside linebacker Ryan McDonald earned a starting role last year and responded by making 45 tackles, fourth on the Brown team. Senior Michael Walsh also started at outside linebacker and ranked second on the Brown team with 47 tackles, including three for a loss. Estes and defensive coordinator Michael Kelleher will look to rebuild the secondary with senior safety Zachary Gillen the lone starter returning.

Brown opens its 2015 season at home on September 19, hosting Bryant at Brown Stadium.  The Bears’ Ivy League schedule opens one week later at Harvard on Saturday evening, September 26 in Boston.
