Brown to host readings of plays about gay marriage

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) – Four Rhode Island theater organizations are participating in a national showcase of plays about same-sex marriage.

The one-act play readings will take place Monday evening at Brown University's Stuart Theatre. The production is called “Standing on Ceremony: The Gay Marriage Plays” and includes 11 short plays.

Brown, Trinity Repertory Company, Rhode Island College and 2nd Story Theatre are presenting the readings. The show is among many that will happen simultaneously at universities and theaters nationwide.

Organizers say before the readings they will also broadcast a speech from the Minetta Lane Theatre in New York City, where the production begins its preview run on Monday.

A portion of the New York City ticket sales will be donated to Freedom to Marry, which advocates for same-sex marriage.
