Brown’s Mike Martin Named Ivy League Coach of the Year, Obi Okolie Earns Defensive Player of the Year

Providence, R.I. – Brown senior captain Obi Okolie (Ajax, Ontario) was named the Ivy League Defensive Player of the Year, head coach Mike Martin was selected the Ivy League Coach of the Year, and Okolie and sophomore forward Tamenang Choh (Lowell, MA) were named to the All-Ivy Team, earning Second Team All-Ivy honors in a vote of the eight Ivy League men’s basketball coaches.

Okolie is the second player in Brown basketball history to be named the Ivy Defensive Player of the Year, joining Cedric Kuaukuemsah, who won the award in 2013 and 2014. His 1,027 career points rank 28thin Brown basketball history, but he earned his stripes by being assigned to the opponents’ top scorer.  In an Ivy League weekend sweep of Harvard and Dartmouth, he held the Ivy League’s top two 3-point marksmen to a combined 2-of-13 shooting from beyond the 3-point arc.

His 25 points vs. Penn were a career high, connecting on 9-of-13 field goals against the Quakers.  He started all 30 games for the Bears and scored in double figures in 19 of Brown’s last 21 games, including 13-of-14 Ivy League games.

Choh posted 10 double-doubles throughout the season and led the Ivy League in rebounding overall (8.7) and in league games (9.5 rpg). He averaged 12.8 points per game and led the Bears with 3.2 assists per game, including a career high seven assists vs. Sacred Heart.

Choh scored in double figures in 20 of Brown’s 30 games and tossed in 20 or more points four times, including a career high 25 points vs. Columbia. He grabbed double-digit rebounds in 12 games with a career high 15 rebounds vs. Yale.

Martin is the first Brown basketball coach to earn Ivy League Coach of the Year honors. He guided the Bears to 19 wins, matching the school record for season victories by Brown’s 2008 team. His young squad improved from a seventh place last year to a fourth place finish in 2018-19, posting a 7-7 league mark. Martin’s team led the Ivy League in scoring defense (68.2 ppg) and three-point scoring defense (.297), while ranking second in the league in scoring offense (73.6 ppg.).
