It was on this date in 1975 that the island country located off the coast of northwest Africa, claimed its independence from Portugal.

Now the largest concentration of Cape Verdeans living in this country is right here in southern New England.

On Friday, July 5th, a flag raising to celebrate their independence will take place at noon, at City Hall in Pawtucket.

On Saturday, July 6th, the 47th Cape Verdean Recognition Parade takes place at 11 a.m. starting at Buttonwood park.

The parade begins down Union Street, turn right onto Acushnet Avenue, turn right onto Grinnell Street, then turn right onto Purchase Street.

On Sunday, July 7th, the 44th RI Cape Verdean Independence Day Festival takes place at India Point Park in Providence, begining at Noon and will go on until dusk. This festival will include music, dance, food, as well as tents.
