Car strikes tow truck in fatal Attleboro accident

ATTLEBORO, MA (WLNE) – A Stoughton man died Sunday after striking a tow truck assisting a disabled vehicle on Interstate 95 Southbound in Attleboro.

Massachusetts State Police said an Attleboro Police Officer had called for a tow truck to remove a disabled vehicle from the highway shortly after 2:00 a.m. Sunday.

After the tow truck arrived it was struck by a passing motor vehicle in the breakdown lane.

Massachusetts State Troopers responded to the scene of the accident and discovered that a 1994 Honda Civic had been traveling southbound when it traveled into the breakdown lane and struck the rear of the tow truck.

The operator of the Honda Civic, identified as Michael A. Avelar, 26, of Stoughton, was determined to be dead on the scene as a result of injuries sustained in the crash.

No other injuries were reported.

The Attleboro Police cruiser was damaged by debris from the collision. All three vehicles were towed from the scene.

The cause of the crash is under investigation.
