SOCHI, Russia (AP) _ New England's pairs figure skating duo of Marissa Castelli (kas-TEL'-ee) and Simon Shnapir (shnah-PEER') completed their first day of competition at the Sochi Olympics with a fifth-place finish after the short program.

Castelli fell and Shnapir put his hand down on their side-by-side triple salchows, but they had a personal-best 64.25 points in an international event. Shnapir, of Sudbury, Mass., says they're thrilled with the score.

Shnapir was born in Russia but moved to the U.S. as a toddler. Castelli is from Cranston, R.I.

The United States team was tied for the fifth-most points after Thursday's short programs for the men and pairs, technically resting in seventh after tiebreakers. The competition will be aired on NBC Thursday night.

Castelli and Shnapir will next compete on Saturday with the free skate.
