CENTRAL FALLS, R.I. — The mother of a 3-year-old boy, as well as her live-in boyfriend were arraigned on child abuse charges on Wednesday after the young boy was found sitting in a bathtub full of cold water.

The toddler’s body temperature 86 degrees, so low that police say he could have died; his small body was blue when authorities arrived on scene.

Making things even more appalling, prosecutors allege the mom waited more than an hour before calling for help.

Police say 26-year-old Kristie Cullen told them she came home and found the boy sitting in a cold bath tub on April 27th.

Her phone was apparently dead and, though the child had turned blue, she waited for her boyfriend 25-year-old Christopher Stanley to get home an hour later before doing anything.

Even when he arrived, police say they did not immediately get help.

The boy was taken to Memorial Hospital before getting rushed to Hasbro Children’s Hospital.

Doctors there found bruises all over his body, scrapes on his bottom as if he been dragged, and severe damage to his throat as if something possibly a spoon had been jammed down it.

Officials also say the boy was extremely malnourished.

The couple allegedly admitted to hitting the child and holding him under cold water when speaking with police, but during the arraignment, they tried to backtrack on that because of the felony charge.

No plea was entered.

Bail was set at $50,000 with the surety and order to have no contact with the child.

They will also have to undergo a mental health screening and treatment if necessary.

The condition of the young boy is unknown at this time.
