Lincoln Chafee Sworn In As Governor

Preparations underway for Tuesday's inauguration.

Lincoln Chafee was sworn in Tuesday as Rhode Island's first independent governor.

Chafee on Tuesday took the oath of office on the steps of the Statehouse, and called in his inaugural speech for greater political collaboration to solve the state's problems – which include a looming state budget deficit estimated in the hundreds of millions of dollars, and an 11.6 percent unemployment rate.

He also called for Rhode Island to pass legislation legalizing gay marriage, and repeated a campaign promise to rescind outgoing Republican Gov. Don Carcieri's executive order cracking down on illegal immigration.

Chafee is a former Republican U.S. senator, who lost his seat in 2006. He left the Republican Party the following year. His father, the late Sen. John Chafee, was governor in the 1960s.
