Charlesgate caregivers rally against closing, march through Providence

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) — Caregivers of the Charlesgate Nursing Center rallied and marched through the city of Providence on Tuesday.
Workers could be seen walking from the Charlesgate facility on Randall Street, past the ABC 6 News station on Orms Street and to the State House.
The rally comes after the news that the nursing center will close by the end of the summer after being in business for the last 50 years.
The workers are members of SEIU 1199NE, a union that represents roughly 100 staff members including registered nurses and other workers.
Davenport Associates told ABC 6 News that severe staffing shortages and decreased state funding led to them shutting it down.
Residents must now transfer to a new facility.
