Chavis Gets Second Homer in As Many Triple-A Games

Michael Chavis homered for the second consecutive night to begin his Triple-A career, and the Pawtucket Red Sox surged from behind to defeat the Buffalo Bisons, 8-5, on Saturday night at Coca-Cola Field.

Down 4-2 heading to the fifth inning, the PawSox (62-68) scored once in the fifth and four times in the sixth to overtake the Bisons (61-67) and level the four-game series at a game apiece.

Chavis, who went 3-for-4 with a homer and two doubles in his Triple-A debut Friday, went 2-for-5 with a two-run shot in the second inning for his encore. First baseman Josh Ockimey added a two-run homer of his own in a 3-for-5 night, and center fielder Tzu-Wei Lin (2-for-5, RBI, BB), catcher Dan Butler (3-for-4, 2 RBI, 2B, BB) and shortstop Mike Miller (3-for-5, R) rounded out a 13-hit effort from Pawtucket.

PawSox starter Justin Haley (W, 6-8) ceded four runs in six innings with six strikeouts, and left-hander Bobby Poyner (S, 6) earned a six-out save.

Buffalo starter Mike Hauschild allowed three runs in five innings, while right-handed reliever Luis Santos (L, 2-3) got saddled with three unearned runs in two-thirds of an inning.

Buffalo struck for two runs in the bottom of the first inning, thanks in part to an RBI single from uberprospect Vladimir Guerrero Jr.

In the top of the second, however, Chavis lifted his second opposite-field homer of the weekend to level the score, 2-2.

Buffalo responded in the home half of the second when Jonathan Davis connected on a solo blast to right-center, and the Bisons extended their lead to 4-2 in the fourth on an RBI single from Roemon Fields.

Pawtucket chipped away in the fifth to pull within one on an RBI single to right field from Lin that plated Aneury Tavarez.

The PawSox then went to work in the sixth, as Ockimey pulled his two-run big fly to right-center to give Pawtucket a 5-4 lead, and Butler supplied a two-run double to center.

Buffalo inched back with an RBI single in the seventh, but Pawtucket tacked on insurance in the ninth when Tavarez lifted a sacrifice fly to center to plate Chavis.

The PawSox continue their four-game weekend series against Buffalo on Sunday at 1:05 p.m. Pawtucket right-hander Chandler Shepherd (6-9, 4.13) is scheduled to start opposite Bisons righty Brandon Cumpton (2-3, 4.76). Radio coverage on WHJJ (920 AM and 104.7 FM) and throughout the PawSox Radio Network begins with the pre-game show at 12:35 p.m.
