Chunk of Newport Cliff Walk to remain closed through summer

NEWPORT, R.I. (WLNE)- A chunk of Newport’s beloved Cliff Walk is expected to remain closed through summer after a 20-foot part of the walkway collapsed in early March.

Communications Officer for the City of Newport, Tom Shevlin says, that a 500-foot section of the walkway is expected to remain closed while the city works to secure funding and implement the repair.

The Cliff Walk is Newport’s biggest attraction, drawing in over a million people a year.

Visitors will have to take a detour on local streets to get around the closed off area.

“At this point we don’t have a timetable for when it could reopen, however we do expect to have detours in place through the summer but the vast majority of the 3.5-mile long walk remains open to enjoy,” said Shevlin.

The city says it is too early to tell what the repairs are going to look like or how much they will cost, but that they do anticipate seeking federal or state support.
