Cicilline bill to bar Trump from running for public office introduced
WASHINGTON (WLNE) — A bill drafted by Rhode Island Congressman David Cicilline to bar former President Donald Trump from running for public office was introduced Thursday.
The congressman was joined by 40 other co-sponsors in introducing the measure.
“Donald Trump very clearly engaged in an insurrection on January 6, 2021 with the intention of overturning the lawful and fair results of the 2020 election. You don’t get to lead a government you tried to destroy,” said Congressman Cicilline.
Cicilline announced he was drafting the bill in November right after Trump announced his intentions for another White House bid.
The bill argues the former president is not qualified to seek public office under the Fourteenth Amendment due to his actions on Jan. 6, 2021 and Trump’s attempts to overturn the 2020 election.
