Citizens Bank announces layoffs

Citizens Bank is announcing a round of layoffs.

A bank spokesperson tells ABC6, pink slips went out to 250 workers in 12 states as the company tries to cut back on costs.

The company issued this statement to ABC6: “In addition to new controls on spending that we recently implemented across the bank, the economic climate has required us to make some difficult but necessary decisions related to our organizational structure. Colleagues who have been impacted have been given priority status for open positions in other parts of the bank.”

Citizens employs about 5,000 people in Rhode Island and its headquarters is in Providence.

The number of workers laid off in Rhode Island is unknown.
