City of East Providence steps in to honor and remember fallen veterans

EAST PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) – The city of East Providence helping the American Legion pay respects to veterans who have lost their lives this Memorial Day Weekend.

Every year, The American Legion, Cub Scouts and community members volunteer to replace older flags with new ones at Veterans’ grave sites at Gates of Heaven Cemetery.

The mayor says this year those groups were having trouble getting enough people together because of COVID-19.

In response, the city stepped in to help round up volunteers, and today they replaced 1,500 flags.

“I think it gives people something to rally around. It’s just been so much negativity, and it gives people something to come in, and rally, and feel some sense of purpose that they’re doing something nice for others.” Said, East Providence Mayor, Bob DaSilva.

And they are not done just yet. They will be coming back with more flags to finish the job.
