Coast Guard recovers body of 64-year-old swimmer at Scarborough Beach

NARRAGANSETT, R.I. (WLNE): The United States Coast Guard identified a body recovered at Scarborough beach Monday morning.

Coast Guard crews resumed a search at 5:00 AM to search for a missing 64-year-old man, where his body was found around 7:00 AM.

The 64-year-old was identified as Matthew Smith of Fitchburg, MA.

According to the Department of Environmental Management (DEM), swimming was restricted to waist-deep at state beaches because of strong surf and riptides following the storm system that passed through the state on Friday.

The DEM says lifeguards at Scarborough made multiple rescues near Black Point during the day.

Coast Guard said they received the call of the missing swimmer (Smith) around 9 p.m. on Saturday night.

The Coast Guard had response boats and a helicopter, according to a spokesperson. Local fire and police departments also were seen assisting the search.
