The United States Coast Guard rescues two fishermen from a sinking boat near Block Island.

The Coast Guard received a call at noon that a 38-foot fishing boat, More Misery, began to take on water and needed assistance 10 miles south of Newport.

Officials dispatched two 45-foot boats with medium crews who successfully helped the men aboard their vessels.

The Coast Guard removed the water from the boat and safely towed it back to Newport.

Petty Officer 3rd Class Timothy Chan says “This case highlights the importance of having the right safety equipment on board.”

Chan also says the fisherman were prepared with a raft, immersion suits, flares and an emergency spot alerting radio beacon in case they needed to leave the ship.

“Luckily, our crews were on scene before they had to.”
