Coast Guard Suspends Search for Reported Crashed Plane

The US Coast Guard reports this morning that it has called off its extensive search for an ultralight plane that was reported to have crashed last night in the waters off Charlestown.

Several USCG boats as well as a Jayhawk helicopter and Falcon jet searched an area of about 150 square miles since Saturday night for any sign of the plane, which a witness says crashed around 8pm Saturday. Rhode Island DEM crews and local fire departments were also assisting.

After that initial report, there were no other reports of a missing aircraft and no local airports reported a missing plane or people.  Search crews found nothing Saturday and Sunday morning.

However, the Coast Guard is keeping several crews on alert in case more information surfaces.  If you do have any information on the incident you are asked to call the Coast Guard at (508) 457-3211.
