An off-duty firefighter jumped into action Tuesday, pulling a man from a burning house in Providence.

The fire broke out on the third floor of a residence on Laban Street around 8 a.m.

Firefighter Derek Lopez was just getting off a 24 hour shift when he noticed flames coming from the house while driving on the highway.

Without hesitation, Lopez ran into the building to get the residents out, learning that a third occupant was living in the basement.

"I began slamming on the door.. 'Your house is on fire, you need to get out,'" he said.

14 people, including nine children, were rescued from the fire with the help of Providence Police Officers Louis Salinaro and Darren Hull.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
