Coventry standoff ends without injury

COVENTRY, R.I. (WLNE) – After 10 hours of negotiation, Coventry Police were able to disarm a domestic assault complaint that had escalated into an armed standoff.

On December 31, Coventry Police were called to a residence on Tiogue Avenue after the victim alleged her boyfriend Kyle Wilkinson threatened her with a handgun before she escaped the home. When officers arrived around 5:45 p.m. they encountered Wilkinson, who was behaving erratically, and was noncompliant. Wilkinson retreated and barricaded his home, Officers see Wilkinson with a firearm and body armor, and in response, lock down the area and evacuate nearby residents.

The Coventry/West Warwick SWAT Team, as well as the Rhode Island State Police Tactical Team, and Rhode Island State Fire Marshall Offices Technical Services Unit arrive to the scene. Repeated negotiations ensued, with several unsuccessful attempts.

Around 3:43 a.m. on January 1, Wilkinson is taken into custody without incident. He was taken to Rhode Island Hospital for evaluation, and will stay in police custody. Wilkinson will be arraigned soon at an undisclosed time.
