Cranston Street residents ready to welcome homeless to armory

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) — Residents near the Cranston Street Armory say they are happy to welcome a new warming center for the homeless in their backyard this winter.

Gov. Dan McKee announced this week that roughly 350 beds will be made available at the armory beginning in the next few weeks. It will run through April 15.

“I think we all just have to learn to live with it,” said Kristin, a resident in the area. “Honestly, I only learned about it the other night on the news. As long as their respectful of their neighbors, we’ll be their neighbors. Everyone needs a bed and a place to stay — that’s it.”

Another resident named Brian echoed a similar message.

“I think we all just want to do our best to help each other, especially to get through a winter,” said Brian.

McKee also told ABC 6 News they are currently evaluating other shelter locations for the upcoming winter.
