Crews battle house fire in Somerset

SOMERSET, Mass. (WLNE)- Somerset Firefighters battled a fire inside a home on Gertrude Street Thursday night.

ABC6 News Crews arrived to the scene seeing multiple units tackling the fire with heavy smoke emanating from the house. They also opened up the roof for ventilation to help with combating the fire.

Deputy Chief of Somerset Fire Jason Phillips confirmed that there were two occupants in the house when the fire began around 6:30 p.m. One occupant was taken to the hospital for evaluation. The cause of the fire is still under investigation, though they believe it was caused by a Christmas tree near the front of the house.

The Deputy Chief also reminded the public to be careful when using extension cords, wires, and electrical equipment during the holiday season.

The fire appears to have caused significant damage throughout the structure.
