Flames rip through roof of barn in North Smithfield
NORTH SMITHFIELD, R.I. (WLNE) — Heavy flames shot through the roof of a barn in North Smithfield early Thursday morning.
North Smithfield firefighters battled the fire just after 12 a.m. inside a barn at the Phoenix Rising Equestrian Center on Pond Hill Road. Woonsocket and Chepachet fire sent mutual aid.
An off-duty Woonsocket police officer saw the billowing smoke on his drive home, and called it in.
The family that owns the barn told ABC 6 News that they were woken up by the responding emergency crews, and didn’t know the barn was on fire.
The barn was was unoccupied at the time of the fire, and no animals were injured. The barn is used to ride horses, which are kept in a separate location, the family said.
The owner said there’s not much electricity in the building besides a few light bulbs, so he’s not sure just how this fire started. The cause of the fire is still being investigated.
The fire didn’t extended beyond the barn, but the barn is a total loss.
