Firefighters are on scene of a large fire at a mill on Sims Ave in Providence.

It started just before midnight Tuesday.

Officials say the fire was in a mostly vacant one story commercial building. The buildings only tenant is the Rhode Island Patient Advocacy Coalition which luckily only sustained water damage.

The roughly one acre building is most likely a complete loss.

One firefighter was injured but with non life-threatening injuries.

Firefighters are expected to be at the scene all day, putting out the fire and making sure it doesn’t rekindle.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Smoke from the fire could be seen for miles.  It covered the city skyline for much of the morning creating some confusion for people.

“I just smelled smoke and I asked my husband if he could smell it.  I was a little concerned it was my apartment like there was something wrong in our apartment building and thankfully it wasn’t,” said Stephanie Horton, Providence.

Fire officials say burning material on the roof is what causes the smoke to be so dark.

ABC6 News will have a full update at noon.
