Shoplifting suspect in custody after striking officer, hitting car and rolling-over in East Providence

The suspect has not been identified by police.

EAST PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) – Seekonk police say a suspect is in custody after leading police on a pursuit into East Providence… after hitting an officer with a car, crashing into another vehicle, and rolling over on Warren Ave.

Seekonk Police Chief Isabella says officers were called to a report of a shoplifter at Home Depot. When officers arrived the suspect fled the scene, and hit an officer with his car. We’re told the officer sustained minor injuries and was treated and released from the hospital.

As the car approached the East Providence line, that’s when police say the suspect hit another car and rolled over on Warren Ave.

Bystanders say police had their guns drawn while communicating with the suspect inside the car. Warren Ave was reopened to traffic just after 1 p.m.

Police arrested Albert Rosario, 32, on the following charges,

  • Assault and Battery with a dangerous weapon
  • Assault with dangerous weapon
  • Use of MV in Commission of Felony
  • Shoplifting
  • Fail to stop for police
  • Unlicensed operation of MV
  • Reckless operation of MV
  • Assorted traffic charges

Rosario also had nine active warrants at the time of the arrest.
