UPDATED: Crews Searching for Missing Swimmer

Officials from the RI Department of Environmental Management have identified the people involved in the water search off of Brenton Park in Newport.

The initial person in the water has been identified as Gregory Minetti, 21, of Bronxville, New York. Minetti was rescued and taken to Newport Hospital.

Nicholas Napolitano, 23, of Atlanta, Georgia had jumped in to rescue Minetti, but was pulled out by the surf, and is still missing.

Andrew Awade, 20, of New York City, called 9-1-1 from the shore, reporting the other two men in the water.

The DEM is still patrolling the are, and a dive team from the Warwick Police, will be assisting Monday morning.  


The Coast Guard is searching the waters off of Newport for a missing swimmer.

The Coast Guard received a call for a missing swimmer shortly after 1 p.m. Sunday.  A 24-year-old man from New York, went missing off the waters of Breton Point. The man is said to be wearing a blue and white swim suite.

Marine units from surrounding areas are also assisting in the search.
